EDUCATION & INFORMATION:

New! Espoma Organic Weed Preventer

What is Espoma Organic Weed Preventer Plus?
Espoma Organic Weed Preventer Plus is derived from corn gluten, an all natural by-product of the production of corn starch. It prevents weed establishment and provides an organic source of nitrogen. This critical nutrient provides good green color and stimulates growth. Since it is all natural and organic the nitrogen is long lasting, non-burning, and won’t leach away.

How does it prevent weeds?
At the time of weed seed germination, the emerging seedling is inhibited from producing roots. The new plant eventually dies from lack of water.

How do I apply?
Apply at a rate of 20 lbs. per 1,000 square feet of lawn with a drop or broadcast spreader. This is very important as applications at lesser rates have been shown to be ineffective. Water the lawn immediately after the application. Do not water again for a period of one week after applying. Excessive watering will diminish control.

When should I apply?
Apply at times when weed seeds are known to be germinating. For most gardeners this will be in the spring to prevent crabgrass and Fall to prevent annual bluegrass and dandelions. Corn gluten will not eliminate existing weeds.

Does it only work on certain weeds?
Espoma Organic Weed Preventer Plus has been shown to control 23 weeds. A more complete list can be found on the bag.

What kind of results can I expect?
Studies on the prevention of crabgrass performed at Iowa State University showed an accumulating effect. In the first year crabgrass was controlled at a rate of 58%; in year two control was over 80%; in year three and beyond it was over 90%.

Can I use it when sowing new grass seed
This is not recommended. The product will inhibit establishment of desirable grass as well as undesirable weeds. When seeding use a good quality organic lawn food.

Can I use the product in the flower and vegetable gardens?
Yes. It will prevent weeds in these situations as well. Apply at the same rate as on the lawn (20 lbs. per 1,000 square feet). Reapplication every 6 to 8 weeks may be necessary for best results. Remember to use only in beds with established plants, not when sowing seed.

Is it safe to use around children and pets?
It is completely natural and safe to use in all areas including those frequented by children and pets.
